“Eco-friendly accommodation on the Whanganui River that you have to fly into.”
Only in New Zealand would you catch a flying fox to your accommodation (ziplining for those who don’t speak kiwi). At the appropriately named, ‘The Flying Fox’, you catch an aerial cable in. Or you can drive your boat up to it if you have one of those. The range of sleeping options are as quaint as the sounds of native birds outside, from a cottage named after James K Baxter to glamping in bell tents. They all sit along the banks of the Whanganui River surrounded by the National Park. There’s no cell phone reception, no wifi and no TVs so it’s a fully unplugged place that runs at its own pace.
