Taihape is called The Gumboot Capital of the World and this statue is here to represent it. If you visit Taihape in March, you can join in with the locals as they celebrate ‘Gumboot Day’ complete with gumboot throwing competitions, music and stalls.

Its a boot (references a fictional TV character who was supposed to be from their town, their one claim to fame) ... if you plan your trip right once a year they have a boot throwing competition
