“A Garden of National Significance.”
The gardens at Upton Oaks have been developed over many years and have been created to harmonise and compliment the style of the 1911 Victorian Villa.
Upon purchase of the property in 1987, the Villa was in a dilapidated state and there was very little evidence left of any gardens. However there was a wonderful old walnut tree and we could see the Villa was just waiting for its potential to be realised. We spent endless hours doing the restoration and at the same time started to create a garden.
Today the garden consists of different garden areas, all contained within a formal framework of hedges and walls, which define and separate the garden rooms. A favourite feature is the large formal 17th century style knot garden which is divided into different colour sections by buxus. View the herbaceous borders and pond plus the productive garden which is accessed via a small olive grove, or along the rose walk, to large raised vegetable beds and espaliered fruit trees on brick walls.
The rear gardens have been designed to compliment Laurella Cottage, our restored 1850's guest cottage, these garden beds contain blue and white perennials, surrounding a French styled iron gazebo, the perfect spot for wedding photos. Although formal lines prevail, the gardens overflow with an abundance of perrenials in colour, in season.
Upton Oaks Garden has graced the pages of numerous books and magazines plus television screens and is visited by many national and international visitors each year. It has geen awarded the rating of a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust.
