“Explore this magical geothermal landscape.”
Within walking and biking distance from central Rotorua, you'll find a beautiful area to stroll or cycle and discover magnificent and unique views of a volcanic playground. Venture beyond the Rotorua Museum and you'll find yourself on a nice boardwalk to Sulphur Point.
Who would have thought you could walk or cycle right from the city centre through such an amazing thermal wonderland? Sulphur Point lives up to its name, with some magnificent examples of steaming vents and boiling mud pools, sitting right on the shores of Lake Rotorua.
The boardwalk out to Sulphur Point begins just beyond the Tudor Bath House in Government Gardens (also a lovely spot for a stroll). The path (2hrs) follows the lakeshore to Motutara Point (Sulphur Bay), which is right on top of an active geothermal area. Further around the point are boiling mud pools and sulphur vents.
