The moon rose even as the sun set. Clams were dug and whales petted. Tacos and cerveza are available at the bar, yet it's beachfront boondocking and it's finest.

I will not spoil your gringo ideals with news of absolutely no service, no WiFi. But if you can't love this place, you are devoid of the very essence of love.

(Also, I'm not entirely sure it's still called Scammond's. It's kind of like a National Park now, called Ojo de Libre Lagoon. Also, note that it's not $5 / night, it's $5 USD to get in. You can then stay multiple nights for that same fee. Not sure how many exactly, there may be a limit but...)

And as always, Enjoy!

Off season for whale watching. The caretaker let us camp for free. We were the only ones camping this night. Lots of palapas, a pier you can walk out on, Osprey, Cayotes, amazing sunset and sunrise. We'll have to return when the Whales are in town. Probably packed then. You also drive through the largest sea Salt mining operation in the world to get here. Interesting.

Another name for this place is Casa Mexican de la Ballena Gris (Mexican House of the Gray Whale). There is a restaurant, campground, and a dock for gray whale tours, as well as a "museum" area with interpretive signs. It's 15 miles off the Transpeninsular Highway, mostly gravel with some washboard sections. But it's worth it!

As you enter on the right there are a number of campsites with palapas, nice spacing between them and all overlooking the lagoon. There are much more remote campsites with no palapas but the road gets sketchier the further you go.

It's dry camping of course, toilets and showers (there's a fee for the showers) are available. Spacing between campsites is nice and there are beautiful views of the lagoon. Many areas in front of the campsites have plants that are protected, but there are some designated walkways to the lagoon. Portions of these do flood in high tide. The place is meticulously clean and the views are gorgeous.

The restaurant is small with a few tables inside, a counter with the cooks behind it and a couple of tables just outside. The food was surprisingly good, my husband's fish had a wonderful garlic sauce that was as good as ones in fancy restaurants. And we watched whale blows in the distance as we ate dinner!

There are coyotes in the area and they are sometimes vocal at night, which can get the dogs going too. But overall it's very quiet and peaceful.

And, of course, there are the whale tours. A unique experience and the only place in the world where whales approach the pangas (boats) and even let you "pet" them. This doesn't happen every time but you will definitely see whales.

What a happy surprise this spot was.

Make sure you ask Google for 2 options to get to the location bc one (the route out of Guerro Negro) is now a salt manufacturing only entrance. Take the route you access off the highway just outside of GN.

It’s $5 to enter and stay as long as you like. Pay at the second gate. Have a tip ready for the roadside guard at the first entrance ;) he’ll likely ask. It’s a long day in the sun for that guy.

If you need wifi or service do what you need before you get to the gate at camp (this gate you pay at) because you’ll be off grid from there on out.

It’s a 30min bumpy ride to the whale x camp gate - but worth it. The sites are rustic, no hook ups, but if you snag a spot overlooking the water you may never leave.

We camped at site 6 the first night and moved to a cliff side spot the second night. We loved our time there. So much solar, the birds x views kept us entertained and if we had wifi we likely would have stayed longer (but I had some projects to submit so we had to leave :( :( ).

There are coyotes who seem almost domesticated. Keep your dogs on a leash at dusk x dawn …

Whale watching was $50USD per person and we loved it. We were early in the season (Jan 9) but still saw our moneys worth.

Can’t wait to stop here on the way out!

100 pesos/night, sites along the coast, at least 26 sites with shelter, and some sites with out. Dirt road coming is pretty leveled and good condition if no rain. Campground road could be flooded on high tide. Whale watching is $50/person.

There is a gate located at the salt operation halfway in from the highway. Early May I was turned around by the guard.
Readers should note that the camp is open only during whale season. I've given this one star, only on the basis of access.
