“a huge museum with a large Picasso collection”
Set in the stunning landscape of Hakone, the Hakone Open-Air Museum opened in 1969 as the first open-air art museum in Japan. Constantly changing with the seasons, our spectacular grounds are the permanent home for approximately 120 works by well-known modern and contemporary sculptors. We also have 5 exhibition halls including the Picasso Pavilion, as well as pieces where children can play, a footbath fed by natural hot springs, and a variety of other facilities where our visitors can relax and enjoy the splendor of art in nature. Over 100 pieces of masterwork are displayed on our 70,000 square meter exhibition grounds, including examples from such world famous sculptors as Rodin, Bourdelle, Miro and Moore. The Hakone Open-Air Museum has a collection of over 300 works by Picasso, centering around a large assortment of pottery purchased from Picasso's eldest daughter, Maya Picasso, but also including a variety of paintings, prints, sculptures, and gold and silver objects. These pieces are all on rotating display in our Picasso Pavilion. We are also fortunate to have in our collection a large number of portraits of Picasso taken by David Douglas Duncan over the last 17 years of the artist's life, which also serve as a precious resource for understanding Picasso and his work. The Hakone Open-Air Museum has one of the world's largest collections of works by the English master sculptor Henry Moore (1898-1986). Our rotating exhibit of the twenty-six pieces in our collection offers the visitor a penetrating look into the artistic sensibilities of this sculptor who famously proclaimed that "sculpture is an art of the open air". In order to provide a space for relaxation and entertainment, the Hakone Open-Air Museum comprises a variety of restaurants and shops in addition to the exhibition galleries. Please feel free to drop by for an appreciation of our exhibition. Footbath Spa "Hot Foot", for healing weary feet, is also a popular site at our museum.
You will lose track of your time because they have more than 2 galleries inside. They have a big open space with different intriguing sculptures and a tower you can climb. I am not into art but I sure did have a great time when we stopped by this museum.
Considered to be one of Hakone's top museum, if you love art, paintings, sculptures etc. then this place won't disappoint. It's very big, with different themes in each building and some sculptures scattered around the big open space. This is also a great place to go to if you are a fan of Picasso since they have their own building dedicated to him.
