“over 300 different parasites”
The Meguro Parasitological Museum is a research facility that was established in 1953 by the private funds of Satoru Kamegai, a doctor of medical science. Since its establishment, the museum has achieved substantial success owing to the help of volunteers in the private sector as well as the assistance of the government, in addition to the support of the academic establishment. The parasite-related materials and specimens held by the museum along with the museum's research and publication activities allow the museum to pride itself as one of the most distinguished museums in the world. The first floor of the museum presents a general overview of parasites while the second floor focuses on human parasites and their life cycles, showcasing 300 actual specimens. Because parasites utilize other animals for their survival, it is difficult to artificially sustain them and we cannot actually show live parasites. Almost all of the specimens in the exhibit hall are preserved in 5% formalin.
A different kind of experience!!
The museum is located in an unassuming and relatively small building a few minutes by bus from Meguro Station and there is not a lot of signs around it. So we had to spend a few minutes looking around.
It was actually smaller than we expected but was enough to give us an idea of how disgusting it can be in the world of parasites.
Definitely a good educational tour and should be included in your itinerary if you're in the area. Admission is free too!
The thought of walking inside a room that's full of parasites gave me shivers but still I wanted to see, its not bad considering that its totally free of charge! It wasn't that gross, but I think one visit is enough for me.
