“The story of the castle is the story of Scotland”

Edinburgh Castle dominates Scotland's capital city from its great rock. Its story has helped shape the nation's story. Battles and sieges were fought over it, royalty lived and died within its walls, and countless generations have been and inspired by it. The castle has sheltered many Scottish monarchs. They include Queen Margaret (later St Margaret), who died here in 1093, and Mary Queen of Scots, who gave birth to James VI in the Royal Palace in 1566. Her great-great-great grandson Charles Edward Stuart - Bonnie Prince Charlie - captured Edinburgh but was unable to take the castle during the 1745-6 Jacobite Rising. In 1996, the Stone of Destiny, on which kings were enthroned for centuries, was returned to Scotland. It is now displayed in the Crown Room.

Walk around the hill out back for some amazing alternate views of the castle. Also, I recommend grabbing some coffee at The Elephant House on George IV Bridge Street, because it was where JK Rowling first started writing "Harry Potter" and the view of the castle is absolutely amazing. You can totally see how it inspired Hogwarts.

This castle is huge and amazing and so much to see. You cannot go to Edinburgh and miss this castle. Tickets must be bought online ahead of time which is unfortunate for those flying more by the seat of their pants. Thankfully, as I don't carry a working phone when I travel, they did make the exception for me to buy onsite. There are great views of the surrounding city and a number of different museum type attractions on site. Seeing the Scottish Crown Jewels was really cool. Truly an amazing place to visit.
Edinburgh castle being one end of the Royal Mile, there are a number of other attractions, shops, and restaurants in the surrounding area.
