Former Benedictine abbey located in the village of Dom Perignon, the Abbey Saint-Pierre of Hautvillers was founded in 650 by the Archbishop of Reims, Saint Nivard. Legend wants that a dove told him where to build the monument. It is in this abbey that famous champagne wine was born after Dom Perignon has elaborated the principle of champagnization in collaboration with Dom Thierry Ruinart, enjoying the many lands and important vineyards owned by the abbey. The Church of St. Sindulphe that is attached also houses the tombs of Dom Perignon and Dom Royer. Now owned by the Champagne house Moët and Chandon, Abbey Saint-Pierre of Hautvillers shows proudly his church, his door St. Helena rebuilt its restored cloister, but also its reliquary of St. Helena or grand organ. From the abbey, the view on the vineyards of Champagne and city of Epernay is just beautiful.
