“famed for the Tianmen holes”
With a name like Tianmen Shan, (the Heaven's Gate Mountain), you know this has to be a really special place. It's in China's Hunan province, roughly 5 miles South of Zhangjiajie. The natural arch cave bored right through theTianmen Mountain is a one-of-a-kind natural feature, but it's not an easy journey to the gate of Heaven-- which is to be expected, I suppose. It involves a 4,196 ft ascent on one of the world's longest passenger cableways, then a nice cruise along a road with with 99 bends crammed into 6.8 miles. If the heights and the curves didn't sideline you, then all you have to do is hike up 999 stairs, which take you right to the base of the arch. A grueling journey, but totally worth it. Also, since it's a hole through a freaking mountain, of course there have been some daredevils who looked up at the majestic wonder and thought, "I want to fly through that." In 2011, Jeb Corliss glided safely through the Tianmen Cave with a wing suit-- he was lucky; Viktor Kováts plunged to his death after an equipment malfunction in 2013. If you're not so much into wing suits or hiking up tons of flights of stairs, you can always take a chairlift to the mountain's summit, which has a Tang dynasty-era temple...and a vegetarian restaurant. -Roadtrippers Tianmen Mountain is located within Tianmen Mountain National Park. It is famed for the Tianmen holes which has been many adventure flights went through the cave in the past years. Another highlights for the Tianmen mountain are glass sky walk and the longest cable car in China.
