“fly high above the Niagara River”
For those who aren’t content to simply enjoy the amazing views of Niagara Falls, there’s always the Whirlpool Aero Car. The tram has been suspending visitors 250-feet over the Niagara Whirlpool since 1916. Don’t worry, they have a perfect safety record. Created by inventor and engineer Leonardo Torres y Quevedo, the Aero Car has been gliding brave passengers across Niagara Fall’s whirlpool in exactly the same fashion as it did nearly 100-years ago. The car hangs from six thick cables that glide 35 guests safety across the entire gorge, all while the water crashes around underneath their feet. The whirlpool, which is a naturally occurring phenomenon, happens when a very quick moving torrent of water changes direction abruptly. This creates a violent vortex of water that’s one-part awesome and one-part terrifying… in a good way, of course. The history of the Aero Car wouldn’t be complete without its own daredevil story. Over the years there have been many illegal (and legal) attempts to cross the gorge using the cables. Luckily, no one has died trying, and today the Niagara Commission frowns upon letting anyone even think about attempting it. -Roadtrippers Soar the Great Gorge, high above the racing Niagara River. You'll be transported through the air in an antique cable car, while far below the torrent of water abruptly changes direction and creates one of the world’s most mesmerizing natural phenomena – the Niagara Whirlpool. Sometimes frightening and always unforgettable! Please note that this attraction is NOT wheelchair accessible. The Aero Car was designed by a Spanish engineer, Leonardo Torres Quevedo and has been in operation since 1916. The cable car is suspended from six sturdy cables and offers a wonderful view of the Niagara Whirlpool which is formed at the end of the rapids where the gorge turns abruptly counterclockwise, and the river escapes through the narrowest channel in the gorge.
Reviews
Bring all your friends who are afraid of heights and cackle maniacally as they tremble while being carted over roaring waters by a century old cable car. What's not to love?
Be sure you call ahead before you go, as the cars only run seasonally.
Come on! It's an Aero Car! It's been in operation since 1916! What could possible go wrong?
Runs Late April - Early Nov, Typically 10am - 5pm, but check their web site for days with extended hours.
Great thing to do! We took the WeGo bus and that helped a lot with where to park. The tickets now give you a time for departure (new feature I was told). It was a bit confusing but as they continue to tweak it I think it'll help speed things along. Decent price for a great experience!
