“near the ancient village of Gitanmaax”
‘Ksan Historical Village and Museum (‘Ksan) is located near the ancient village of Gitanmaax, at the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers in the community of Hazelton, British Columbia. For centuries and possibly millennia, Gitxsan’s have maintained communities at important canyons and junctions on the Skeena River. This location was an important fishing site and transportation hub. As a replicated ancient village, ‘Ksan illustrates many features of a Gitxsan village from the distant past. For example, like its predecessors, ‘Ksan’s houses form a single line with each building facing the river. From this position, the large decorated house fronts and totem poles of the village are visible from the water. In conjunction with other features, such as the smoke house and food cache, ‘Ksan illustrates characteristics typical of a past Gitxsan village.

Good basecamp to visit First Nation sites and Old Hazelton. Scenery was beautiful, spaces were separated and free firewood! The native demonstration village next door was unfortunately closed, but we still went to visit the old totem poles. Visitor center in (New) Hazelton was great! Decent grocery store very close by.

We stayed here 8/11/22.
It is a bit off the beaten path. We arrived without a reservation, but easily got a dry site along the river. As you enter the camping area after the office, to the right are a couple rows of full hook up sites, these were all taken by mostly long term RV's. Then there is a row of back in sites and then some river view sites along the river. Entering on the left were sites more of the loop style, offering more privacy.
Nearly all the back in sites were up on a flat narrow berm with slopes on each side of the pad. What made it even more difficult to back in, was the fact the road was narrow. In some cases, it would be better to just pull in instead of backing in. Some of these sites also had obstacles such as bushes or overhead branches adding to the already difficult situation. We had one such site and after an attempt or two we returned to the office to select a site that worked great for us (site 39). We so much perfer that style, let us pick the site and report back to pay!
Most sites had a picnic table and fire pit and lots of trash cans through out the campground. There are pit toilets and a tired building with flush toilets, showers for a loonie, one washer and one dryer. The wifi was slow and only really worked while sitting on the porch of the office. The lawn was mowed. The dirt trail by site 39 leads to old town, a fun place to walk around. If in season, the area next to site 39 had raspberries, yum!
Ksan Historical Village and Museum are next door with long houses and Totem Poles.
No rules are posted or given, not necessarily a bad thing, but some rules are good to know.
