Well, to be honest, you can drink the water but only after boiling it for one minute. We happened to be on Salt Spring Island for a few days and ended up needing to do a couple loads of laundry; we discovered there are NO laundromats anywhere on SSI. The only other RV campground (Mowhinna Resort) does not offer guest laundry - something to do with SSI being on a level 4 drought and water being extremely scarce/expensive. So we happily ended up at Cedar Beach Resort.
We were warmly greeted by the super friendly couple who manage the property, Shona & Gregor. These two deserve 5 STARS for their friendliness and willingness to go the extra mile to help make our stay as enjoyable as possible. For example, our site #13, had a rather quirky power plug location which necessitated the use of an extension cord. They generously offered to let us use their loaner cord so we wouldn’t have to unpack ours. They greeted us warmly in the AM on our way to/from the guest laundry and wished us well on our way out of the driveway. It’s kind folks like Shona & Gregor that make me glad we choose to travel in a camper van.
As for the resort, it has all the amenities and more that anyone could hope for - albeit a little bit dated and in need of some TLC/updating. For example, the swimming pool has been drained for some reason related to the beautiful St. Mary Lake water intruding into the (concrete) pool foundation and discolorong the water. The guest showers/bathroom are free, hot & have great water pressure... but they felt tired with moldy curtains, dead bugs, and cobwebs in the ceiling and corners.
The private beach at St. Mary Lake is lovely with a cute little snack shack and equipment rental hut (paddleboards!). There were lots of comfortable beach chairs available to sit on and the resort has a decidedly family-friendly feel to it. You can tell lots of families make this place an annual destination.
Speaking of annual/long term guests... the RV area appears to be biased toward long term/full-time RV dwellers. There were a handful of short-term guests like us, the RV occupying the spot next to us (site #12) appears to have not moved in a VERY long time. The friendly managers Shona & Gregor also live full-time in a 5th Wheel on site.
Overall, we would like to have been able to fill our freshwater tank (but couldn’t due to the boil order on drinking water) but we were very thankful to have the ability to do laundry. Add to that Shona & Gregor’s friendly attitude, that dogs are welcome for a ONE TIME fee of $10 (wether you stay for 1 night or a month, it’s $10), and full hookups; we would definitely return to Cedar Beach Resort.
