“Take a shot of this old Telegraph station before it disappears under the ever encroaching white sand dunes. Forever.”
The starkness of the surrounding white dunes around the old telegraph station creates a spectacular if not eerie image, which can be seen to the south of the town of Eucla. The original town was established in 1877 as a manual repeater station for the overland telegraph, way before the Internet made everything so easy. The remainder of the original town is now under the sand, after a plague of rabbits ate most of the dune vegetation, which then caused large sand drifts to encroach on the town site. While wandering around the ruins, tune into the supernatural, as the area is said to be haunted by a ghost. Eucla is ten minutes from the South Australian border and is a two day drive east of Perth. There's a Telegraph Museum at the Eucla town site worth a visit if you want to know more.
