“The Channel Heritage Centre is a purpose-built community museum, research library, exhibition gallery and a cafe/shop.”

The Channel Heritage Centre is a purpose-built community museum, research library, exhibition gallery and a cafe/shop. Its aim is to promote and preserve the history and heritage of the D'Entrecasteaux Channel area. The museum's displays feature early exploration, Aborigines, timber, boat building, fruit growing, fishing, sport, churches, schools, transport and militaria. A shop and three colonial-style rooms display aspects of everyday life in the past. The Electrona Carbide Works was unique in Australia and has its own display. We also house the Don Norton Camera Collection and two rooms depicting the home life of Dutch migrants in the 1950s. The library has a collection of folders, books, photographs, newspaper clippings, family histories and memorabilia to satisfy the serious researcher and the casual browser. The gallery features displays by local artists and organisations which change monthly. Artwork is often for sale. It is also used for in-house temporary displays on special occasions. The shop sells craft and produce made by locals, and the cafe has food and drinks made on site. Guided school visits by arrangement - see website. There is easy access for the elderly and disabled and groups from homes etc. are most welcome.
