“Sleep, eat and play underground - live like a local in Coober Pedy.”
Coober Pedy lies in the middle of the harsh outback where locals struck the biggest haul of opals back in 1915. Naturally, they wanted to stay so they built a town under the ground, so they could continue to dig for opals, and not wilt in the above ground blistering heat. Nowadays half the town live underground so the thing to do when visiting is to join them. The Lookout Cave features a large and impressive underground hallway that has been excavated out of the sandstone rock. The rooms go deep into the hillside; up to 50 metres at ground level and approximately 25 metres underground, and are popular from the single traveller to a family or large groups. For a longer stay, or a better chance of finding some of your own opals, they have 4 Star Miners Dugouts that have been refurbished with full kitchen facilities.
