“The Kiama Coast Walk is one of the best walking trails in Australia, with spectacular vistas, ancient rock formations, beautiful beaches and fascinating heritage.”
You can spot humpback and other majestic whales migrating along the coast from vantage points between May and November.
The 22km walk is best broken into three sections and completed over two or three days. There are railway stations and parking near various stages along walk.
The first section is from the Minnamurra River to Blow Hole Point and is about three hours. As well as walking, you can stop and enjoy swimming or snorkelling at various locations. You'll pass Jones Beach, Cathedral Rocks, Bombo Beach and Kiama Harbour on your way to the famous blowhole.
Other attractions include the Boneyard and the Spring Creek Wetlands. Near the blowhole is the 1881-built Pilot’s Cottage Museum and the heritage-listed Kiama Lighthouse. The trail also takes you past the Kiama Golf Club, which charms with panoramic views, a restaurant and an 18-hole course.
The second section is from Blowhole Point to Kiama Heights and takes about 90 minutes. You’ll wander through waterfront reserves - Storm Bay, Surf Beach, Kendalls Beach, Easts Beach and Loves Bay - connected by headlands. Take a break at the Little Blowhole midway along this route.
The third section takes you from Kiama Heights past Werri Lagoon to Werri Beach in Gerringong. This stretch winds along cliff tops with stunning ocean views and takes about two hours to complete. Markers are featured along the entire walk, explaining the fascinating history and the area’s geology.
Upon reaching Werri Beach, continue on a little farther along the beach and up to the southern headland, where there is a whale-watching platform at the end of the cemetery. Whales swim close to the shoreline because of the prevailing currents. Gerringong railway station is a short walk away.
If you'd like to continue your walk, you can amble for another 45 minutes south to picturesque Gerroa, at the northern section of Seven Mile Beach. For a safe and enjoyable day out, take water with you and sun protection, and wear suitable footwear and be prepared for wet weather.
