“More metal than Metallica”
The unique Windmill Farm is a remarkable collection of elaborate "whirligigs" produced by local outsider folk artist Vollis Simpson. The works incorporate complex movement and sound as a integral part of the more than 30 works designed and constructed on Simpson's property. Simpson's welded and painted constructions are large in scale and have been exhibited at The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, The Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD, at the inner harbor, and are featured in downtown Raleigh, two blocks from the Exploris Museum. Simpson has been featured in several publications including Sign and Symbol, People, Newsweek, Time Magazine, and other popular books and publications.
what you dont know is the park only has 4 of his creations, guess all the others hidden someplace else, would be a cool stop off it you could see the things shown in the photo above
ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE ! stopped by in September 17 and the Park was being prepared for it's Grand Opening. Visited the build site on the next block for a well informed informal tour of the facility where the BIGGEST whirligig was being completed. We will DEFINITELY revisit Wilson again when traveling south next year, and hope for a little more breeze. Well worth the side trip if you have the time.
This park is actually being relocated, so there was very little to see.
If you want to see the five that are currently up so far, they are in the future park at the corner of South Street and Goldsboro SW Street, Wilson, NC. If you get off of exit 122 on I-95 you will find a bunch of restaurants to eat at (either on your way in or out). There's free off street parking if you drive around a little bit not too far from the future park.
This is pretty cool! There's a nice lawn if you want to picnic and see all of the whirligigs. There are at least 30. They have music and movie events here on.the summer. Definitely worth a visit.
Coolest place I've been to so far! The whirligigs in the sky are incredibly cool especially in the wind when they move. definitely recommend if you're in the area
Do not go! Not what it seems. Real park opens in Wilson in 2015!
Vollis Simpson has passed and his whirlygigs are being relocated in Wilson, NC.
Loved seeing all of the whirligigs in the park (way more than 4 all around the square!) and reading the history of them. We also checked out the museum across the street. We lucked out as well because leashed dogs were allowed inside. I teach middle school engineering and I can’t wait to bring back pictures to my students!
Stopped on sept 17 2019 and it was awesome! There are at least 15 if his creations there. What a cool place!!
