“Rebuilt and Standing Strong!”
On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina, the most devastating storm in the history of the United States, came ashore. Winds of over 140 MPH and a tidal surge of nearly 30 feet completely destroyed all of Buccaneer State Park's structures, waterpark and support facilities. The park has been under complete and varying stages of reconstruction over the last seven years, and is being beautifully restored. Phases I and II of construction are complete. Phase III of construction is currently underway, and is scheduled to be completed by early spring 2013. Located on the beach in Waveland, Buccaneer is in a natural setting of large moss-draped oaks, marshlands and the Gulf of Mexico. Use of this land was first recorded in history in the late 1700's when Jean Lafitte and his followers were active in smuggling and pirating along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The French Buccaneer, Lafitte, inhabited the old Pirate House located a short distance from what is now the park. The park site, also known as Jackson's Ridge, was used as a base of military operations by Andrew Jackson during the Battle of New Orleans. Jackson later returned to this area and built a house on land that is now Buccaneer State Park.

Confirmed by 5 users | Last reported on June 10, 2023We were traveling to New Orleans tent camping and decides to stay here because it got great reviews and was close to the city. This site is probably best for RV campers. The staff was really nice when we called, allowed us to arrive late and pay the next morning. The showers were fine and plenty of them. Lots of amenities near the RV sites, but the primitive camping was more primitive than I expected and the RV sites were crowded and close together. You couldn't feasibly walk to the bathhouse from the tent camping sites and there was no fire ring. Overall the location is great if you want beach or casino or New Orleans access but be advised primitive tent camping is primitive.
Wonderful park for Camping! We camped with my 3 children and loved it. Clean and peaceful. The nearby "beaches"; however, were not as impressive. Also, you have to pay $6 for adults and $4 for kids at the pool in the park. Camping, yes... much else, not so much...
We camped here for one night in March, 2015 in a 35 foot fifth wheel. We arrived without reservations and stopped at the office to check in. We were asked to drive around and pick a site and then come back to pay.
All of the structures at this popular state park were completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Reconstruction of the park was completed in 2013 and the results are amazing. All of the buildings, water park, wave pool, and splash pool have been rebuilt and look brand new. It looks more like a resort than a state park. The large campground has several loops with paved pads and full hookups as well as a primitive camping loop. There are even some beach campsites with views of the Gulf of Mexico.
We visited here during the off season before all of the pools were open. I would highly recommend this park.

We opted to stay in the portion of the park that is separated from the Gulf by only a two lane road. This portion of the park has electric and water but no sewer hookup. It was a quiet and serene place to stay for the night. This park has been overhauled after the devastation of Katrina and in season offers, among other things, a water park that our kid would have loved had it been open. The main camping area of the park looked to be more what you would expect from a state park, with a few loops of various concrete pads and shade trees. The area we chose is basically an open field with hookups right on the water, and a paved area with hookups that resembles a parking lot.
I feel I should note that there are a few ways to get to the entrance of the park. ONLY ONE is good for longer RVs. Do your research and be sure you're on the west side of the park as you head towards the gulf, and will ultimately hit Beach Blvd and go east to the entrance. There is a railroad track that must be crossed if you approach the park from the east side. It is a very steep incline on both sides, and if you're driving something long, say a 40 foot bus, it will bottom out as you crest the tracks. I know because I did it while deadheading there after my headlights zapped out about 10 miles out from the park. At night.

We are a 25-foot Tiger Adventure Vehicle Pulling a 12-foot Turtleback Trailer. We phoned ahead to ask a few questions and among other things, were told that they were not busy. I guess you could say they "weren't busy" but when we got there the campground was at least 50% full. We didn't need any hook-ups, but we still had to pay full price ($29.96) for spot 182, in the back. We got there just before sunset. Had we known about the train and the road noise, we would have asked to move farther forward. When we saw a nice pull through spot that was open farther forward, we asked if we could switch. They said no because of the electric didn't work even after we explained we wouldn't need any hook-ups. On our site, there was no fire ring and no picnic table. Pad was level, but gravel and slightly soft. Seemed a bit pricey for us.

Getting here was pretty good. There was some driving through neighborhoods depending which way you come in. The staff was friendly and site was easy to find.
We had a backin site that was full hookup, well marked, and concrete parking area. We were in 82, but if you want to get in the same area, 81 would be a little easier to back in to.
The playground for the kids was really good. There were some hiking trails but we did not make it over to them. There is a huge waterpark on site but it was closed for the season. If it was open and we went there, probably would have given a 5 star here - really nothing wrong with this place.
The day we were there it had just rain so it was a little muddy, but not terrible.
The laundry and camp store are in an elevated building to keep it up from storm surges.
We would come back here again if we passed through the area and if we were in season for the water park.

Buccaneer State Park is a state park in
Mississippi. It is located off U.S. Highway 90 at Waveland. The park sits on the Gulf of Mexico and was entirely rebuilt after all its buildings were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
There is a nice bike trail along the Gulf that goes into Bay

We love listening to birds and quiet. But here, you are literally surrounded by noise. We were parked by the pool which runs 24/7. They patrol constantly so there is that plus it is noisy at night with patrols. There is no privacy. The sites in the northern part of the campground had more trees and seemed like it would be quieter but the train comes through there a few times a day and night.
Otherwise, there is a great playground, plenty of places to walk, great proximity to New Orleans and is very clean and well maintained. In the summer even more to do with wave pool, etc.

Great park, nice sites to pick from. 141 is in the back area where there is more privacy, but also near the railroad tracks that have quite a bit of traffic, but you do get use to the whistles after a short while. You can’t see the train or tracks, plenty of cover from the trees. Good shower facilities, but the interior fans do little to cool off the hottest part of the day. Park seems to employ plenty of college age help at gates and all, but there is constant security patrols throughout. Large enough pads for most all RVs and some are double wide pads.
Getting a water side lot requires you to first reserve a site in the park and you can then move to a first come, first served site across from the beach area which seems to fill up quickly on weekends, but was practically empty when we arrived on Sunday. Plenty of kids here, bikes are everywhere with the wave pool, water park and wading pool.
No real problems with bugs at all other than mosquitos, so be sure to get your spray out if you intend to sit out for any length of time. Sites are hard pack, sandy with concrete pads that are level. Only issue were the tree roots popping up that creates trip hazards, but will take it to get the shade on the back sites vs the front sites.
Nice park, a little tricky getting to, but stay on beachfront and there is no problems from 90. Other roads require you to go over railroads that are a bit steep and you would want to avoid in a motor home coach. Our bumper pull did great either way. Will be going back again.

Pretty nice place, wasn't much to do when I went, a lot of room to walk, and you can park by the water in a small section if you like. Was full hookup, and paved sites but I did laugh my site was unlevel. Im not sure if was somehow due to my error but I am pretty certain was a shotty pave job but no biggie at all. Hookups were nice but the hosepipe had maybe 1-2 threads on it I had to find some rubber grommets as It was flooding the place. The bath houses were nice and clean, Laundry was fairly far away from my site. I didn't use it. The beach is ok I believe you can walk as far as you want but not much walkable sand. There was a nature trail I didn't go on it. Overall site was nice and would have been pretty good in summer with the pool and waterpark.
No fire rings it was just open and in the sandy areas, it was great with me but was a little shocked.
On another note I was having a good few beers one day and felt like a fire. Whoever answered the phone didn't seem to know what firewood was. I was confused. I hate to buy wood anyway but it might have just been the area I am not from here. I have seen wood at every site I have been to.
No problems here was a pretty good stay, the rangers drove around all day, non stop It must have been down time.
