“over 20 million visitors a year”
Each year, millions of people visit the National Mall and Memorial Parks to recreate, to commemorate presidential legacies, to honor our nation's veterans, to make their voices heard, and to celebrate our nation's commitment to freedom and equality. The National Mall is an open-area national park in downtown Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States. The National Park Service (NPS) administers the National Mall, which is part of its National Mall and Memorial Parks unit. The term National Mall commonly includes areas that are officially part of West Potomac Park and Constitution Gardens to the west, and often is taken to refer to the entire area between the Lincoln Memorial and the United States Capitol, with the Washington Monument providing a division slightly west of the center. The National Mall receives approximately 24 million visitors each year.
I used to go to DC every summer as a kid to visit my uncle with my family. Even though I walked through the Mall countless times, it never felt anything less than awe-inspiring. The older I got, the more I learned about all of the history that the monuments represented and all of the history that had taken place right where I was walking. Plus, when I was really little, it just looked like the most giant space there ever was.
I've been to the Mall both times I've been to DC. It is a fine place. It is really wonderful to walk among so much history. Knowing the various rallies and events that have taken place there it is really great to be in that same place.
It is a long walk, so be ready. Bring some water and sunscreen, because there isn't much shade either. It is a great place of a picnic and a game of frisbee.
If you're looking for one of the best ways to see tons of the monuments and museums in DC in one go, then I highly recommend a walk down the Mall. It leads you straight to the Lincoln Memorial. It's also the filming location for that scene in Forrest Gump. Best time of year to visit in my opinion is either the Fall when the leaves are changing color and falling, or Spring when it's cherry blossom season.
A great place for a walk. The museums are great, but they can be a little overwhelming, both from the fact that there are legitimately so many of them and that they're all so huge and thoroughly stocked. Plan to come back here.
Even though I grew up in this area and have been here countless times it never gets old and I still feel like there's more to be discovered. A must see!
Much like the rest of DC, the National Mall is breathtaking. No matter the weather, the views and the walk are really enjoyable. This is from a tourist's point-of-view, but it's a really romantic spot and makes you proud to be an American!
Besides all of the incredible and enlightening museums along the way, I love walking past all the people playing frisbee. I always had such a lofty view of science, history and art, so seeing those great things contrasted with just straight summer fun of frisbee, picnics and dog walking is always great. I've been here in February as well and still saw some die hards playing frisbee.
Go at night! I've only ever been during the day during the hot humid summer, but I went for the first time at night when it was cooler outside. Definitely visit at night at least once! Way less crowded, and lights are beautiful.
Make sure to bring a hat in the summer!
