“Most popular US art museum”

The National Gallery of Art preserves, collects, exhibits, and fosters understanding of works of art at the highest possible museum and scholarly standards. Masterworks by the most renowned European and American artists, including the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas and the largest mobile ever created by Alexander Calder, await visitors to the National Gallery of Art, one of the world's preeminent art museums. The Gallery’s collection of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculpture, medals, and decorative arts traces the development of Western art from the Middle Ages to the present. Open to the public free of charge, the Gallery was created for the people of the United States of America by a joint resolution of Congress accepting the gift of Andrew W. Mellon in 1937.  The Gallery’s campus includes the original neoclassical West Building designed by John Russell Pope, which is linked underground to the modern East Building designed by I.M. Pei, and the verdant 6.1-acre Sculpture Garden. Temporary special exhibitions spanning the world and the history of art are presented frequently.

One of my favorite among all the museums in DC. I first became introduced to the National Gallery of Art after spending Monday evenings in its sculpture garden listening to the live jazz there. The gallery has an extensive collection of art from all manners of time periods and styles, and I think the underground connection between the West and East buildings is just the coolest. A great place to get lost in for an afternoon, especially during the muggy DC summer.

Large collections of so many noted artists. It's easy to "create your own tour" and just see the artists you are interested in or even duck in to see a specific piece you really like. My sister and I visited one day and returned the next day to see one of her favorite sculptures again. Not as long a line to get in either.

The whole museum is organized into different rooms, each one representing a different historic period. To name just a few, Picasso, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Gauguin, Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Renoir, Rodin, Monet, Manet, Degas all grace the walls of this fantastic art museum. It's big so if you're like me you won't want to go through the whole museum at once, but pick a few artists you like and go see for yourself!
