Iconic Attraction

Our Take

This very reverent monument is a must-see if you’re doing the National Mall, or if you find yourself burnt out on the constant back and forth of politics in our nation’s capitol. Take a moment to reflect on this remarkable figure, and how we could really use more people like him in our government today.

“honoring President Lincoln”

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. across from the Washington Monument. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor of the primary statue – Abraham Lincoln, 1920 – was Daniel Chester French, and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. It is one of several monuments built to honor an American president. Like other monuments on the National Mall – including the nearby Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, and National World War II Memorial – the memorial is administered by the National Park Service under its National Mall and Memorial Parks group. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since October 15, 1966. It is open to the public 24 hours a day. In 2007, it was ranked seventh on the List of America's Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects.

If you're in DC, the Lincoln Memorial must be on your places to visit. The monument is epic, but also not to be overlooked is the view from the top steps over the reflecting pool back to the capitol.

Unfortunately, this monument is a little hard to get to. No metro stations are nearby, the busing system isn't much help either, and do not underestimate the walk from the Washington monument/WWII monument area. It's longer than it seems.

If you have a car park along the potomac by the cherry trees. If you're lucky you can find a space there. Otherwise you're walking.

I went to this place on a school trip, and we were exhausted because we'd been going going going all day, and we ended up the day at the Lincoln Memorial. It was very tranquil, and at sunset, every part of it is beautiful, from the marble to the pool to the statue itself. Great place.

Also one of the kids on the trip shoplifted a copy of the Constitution from the gift shop and we all got in trouble for it. But I won't hold that against the memorial.

For the best view, go at night to the farthest pillar on the right, good view of Washington monument in reflecting pool with the Capitol building in full view. The mall is two miles from Lincoln to the Capitol. So be prepared to walk!

My family and I visited Washington DC in December while on holiday from Australia and I was very surprised how big the building and the statue were. We spent about 3 hours having a look around The Lincoln Memorial and looking at the other memorials along the reflecting pool. I would suggest that you spend some time there in the day time and then take another walk looking at the memorials in the dark as the lights make each of them take on a different feeling.

It's a beautifully designed building and area that I highly recommend visiting. It's not far from the Korean War Memorial so you can visit them all in one quick trip. When I went the Reflecting pool was drained for maintenance which was a bummer but I was a rebel and decided to walk across the drained pool like I was jenny from Forrest Gump.

Awesome! Such beautiful architecture and standing at the feet of Lincoln is pretty overwhelming. The view out over the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument is pretty great too. Washroom facilities are in the bottom which was a happy surprise after the long walk along the mall

The family and I were here in June of 2017. Very busy, but everyone moved quickly for others to take photos. It was very impressive. They were cleaning the pool and it was very smelly. That was the only downfall because we couldn't enjoy the serenity of the whole place. I would most definitely go back.

Very beautiful and historical. Be prepared for a long day of walking and an endless day of people. Although it is always packed, it is a must see if you're in the near by area!
