“Picnic near the Cool Waters!”

Wildwood State Park comprises 600 acres of undeveloped hardwood forest terminating on the high bluff overlooking Long Island Sound. Trailer and tent sites are available for campers. Swimmers can take advantage of the cool waters of the Sound, and picnickers can relax at shaded picnic tables as their children enjoy the nearby playground. Visitors can fish and use the hiking and cross-country ski trails.

Wildwood State Park is the largest state park on Long Island. In the middle of May the campground was nearly empty during the week but was nearly full each of the two weekends we were here. The sites are decently spaced apart and most are pull thrus but there isn't any privacy. There is a separate tenting section so we were surrounded by trailers, fifth wheels and a few Class A motorhomes.

There is a beach/picnic area in the park but it is still much too cold for any swimming. I imagine later this year when temperatures are higher and school is on summer break this place is packed all week long, at least judging by the size of the parking lot.

It is a 20 minute drive to the Ronkonkama Station of the Long Island Railroad which has service to Madison Square Garden in the heart of NYC. It is also just a short ride across the island to visit the Fire Island National Seashore.

The park is also located near the North Fork of the Long Island Wine Trail with many vineyards and farm stands to visit.

The sites are large, nicely spaced and with full hookups, but no privacy between sites. Bathrooms were clean and plenty of hot water for the showers.

There is a $4 a night premium for the weekend nights.

We visited this campground from 05/02/19 to 05/13/19.

Took the kids here for a weekend getaway. After reading many reviews saying how loud this campground is I was a bit nervous. Turned out to be very quiet and peaceful. Large spacious sites and most all are shaded.
If you have children the playground and beach are FAR away. Playground was closed for COVID so I can’t really knock em for that. They can really use another playground or two. Also beware of the poison ivy on the walk to the beach. But overall had a pleasant trip.

I had read horror stories about loud parties on the weekend, but our Sunday overnight in September could not have been more chill. Barely 1/4 of the sites were occupied, and our neighbors were courteous. Sites are spacious and ours was level (not all of them are; though.) Basic bathrooms and showers are available. COVID-19 was being taken seriously. There are 4 miles of trails you can access right from your campsite, and there was a great beach access. Negatives: apparently you have to rent a fire ring to make a fire, No WiFi available, and there are ticks.
