“the final resting spot of over 20,000 buffalo”

The Vore Buffalo Jump is an archeological site in Crook County, Wyoming. A sinkhole, formed where gypsum soil was eroded, leaving a steep-sided pit about 40 feet (12 m) deep. Native American hunters could stampede bison in the direction of the pit, which was deep enough to kill or disable the animals that were driven into it. The location is one of a number of buffalo jump sites in the north central United States and southern Canada. The Vore site was used as a kill site and butchering site from about 1500 AD to about 1800 AD. Archeological investigations in the 1970s uncovered bones and projectile points to a depth of 15 feet. About ten tons of bones were removed from the site. About five percent of the site has been excavated, and the pit is estimated to contain the remains of 20,000 buffalo.

Interesting history however… you are required to walk through a little building to enter the viewing area. You may not use the restroom without purchasing and attending a $9, 45 minute tour. You may not just take a quick peak without a “guide” chaperoning you.

We stopped and had a guided tour of the site, which includes the excavation tent. Learned a lot about the way the Native Americans hunted buffalo before they had horses.

Great place to stop! Even though we arrived after closing, the fence was still open and we were able to walk around the jump and into the pit.

We did the guided tour and my kids loved it more than I expected. They asked lots of great questions and had fun learning about this site. After the tour they also got to try throwing spears with atlatls, so fun!

We needed a stop on our trip and this fit the bill. Learned a lot about the pre-horse Indian culture. The tour was worth it as you get access to the excavation site which is really remarkable.

I wanted to stop, but we missed it. :) If you pay attention, you can still catch a glimpse from the highway. Worth a stop if you don't miss your exit.
