“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”
I may have just found one of the best roadside attractions yet. It surely brought back some memories and for those items before my time, a certain nostalgia. It is located in nowhere land between Dixon, NM and Taos, NM on SR68.
The first time, I passed by it, but a few miles down the road, I decided to pull a U-turn and head back. You see, I have a certain pension for antique things and I knew I would never live it down if I didn’t go back.
Besides, it’s only open on the weekends, so it was now or never, but I found out later that if you call ahead the curator will specially open it up for you. That’s awesome especially since the price of admission was free. To top it off, he does take donations which he gives to a local no-kill animal shelter.
It’s called the Classic Gas Museum and it’s full of gas pumps, old signs, old automobiles and kids toys related to automobiles and transportation. The curator is Johnnie Meier. Once a employee for Los Alamos National Laboratories, he decided to pursue his dream of collecting old gas related relics and he’s been at it for over 30 years.
When I got out of my car, he told me that he had stuff rusting out front, to the side, and about a half acre more rusting out back and anything restored was inside.
This is a must-see stop. You'll relive your childhood again.
We stopped here on our way back to Santa Fe from Taos. We thought to be there a few minutes and ended up staying over an hour. As a former Amoco employee, I was mesmerized by all the old memorabilia. Every time I thought I had seen everything, I found more. There is no charge to visit - he only asks for a donation to the local humane society, which we gladly gave.
