“a gorgeous tree cathedral, best seen at dawn”
Reminiscent of Northern Ireland's Dark Hedges, this tree cathedral is located in Vacherie, Louisiana, near Evergreen Plantation. You can view it from Old River Road. About Evergreen Plantation: Evergreen Plantation is the most intact plantation complex in the South with 37 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including 22 slave cabins. Evergreen has its country's highest historic designation and joins Mount Vernon and Gettysburg in being granted landmark status for its agricultural acreage.Today, Evergreen Plantation remains a privately owned, working sugar cane plantation. People live here and work here. Evergreen Plantation is located on the west bank of the Mississippi River, between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Parts of the film "Django Unchained" were filmed here.
You cannot wander around the ground, i.e. see this tree canopy without a tour guide - it is fenced off. There are three tours a day at 9:30, 11:30 and 2. You have to stay with the guide. I went at noon and was unable to do anything other than see it from the road. There is a small museum in the ticket office. It's still worth the visit but the tour seems like the best bet if you want to really see anything.
A long drive if you're staying in NOLA, but totally worth it!
