“a monument to the community and its betterment”
The Urbana Landmark Hotel, formerly known as The Urbana-Lincoln Hotel, was designed by the famous architect, Joseph Royer, and built in 1923 by a group of local prominent citizens aiming at attracting travelers to downtown Urbana and turning the city of Urbana into the center of culture and entertainment in central Illinois. "The Urbana-Lincoln Hotel is a community enterprise. The hotel in the first place was not an investment but meant to be a monument to the community and its betterment." --Alvin Burrows, Urbana Daily Courier Publisher and President of the Hotel Association at the hotel's dedication in February, 1924 During most of its past 90 years of service to guests from all over the world, the Urbana Landmark Hotel gained a reputation as the hotel for the rich and famous. In November 2010, Mr. Xiao Jin Yuan, a Californian hotel owner with a passion for the preservation of the unique European style building, purchased the hotel and joined hands with the authority of the city of Urbana to have this historic hotel designated as the local landmark. After 2 years of renovation and on December 1, 2012, the Urbana Landmark Hotel opened its doors again to welcome its guests.
