Our Take

Built in 1773, the Tybee Island Light is one of seven surviving colonial-era lighthouse towers, making it the oldest in Georgia; it's also the tallest in the state. It has survived storms, earthquakes, fires, the Confederates, and a questionable all-black paint job, and is still in use today. A ticket includes admission to the grounds and cabins, the museum across the street, and a trip to the top of the tower, from which you may or may not be able to see Sandra Bullock's vacation home.

“guiding mariners safe entrance for over 270 years”

Ordered by General James Oglethorpe, Governor of the 13th colony, in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been guiding mariners safe entrance into the Savannah River for over 270 years. The Tybee Island Light Station is one of America's most intact having all of its historic support buildings on its five-acre site. Rebuilt several times the current lightstation displays its 1916 day mark with 178 stairs and a First Order Fresnel lens (nine feet tall).

This light house has such a spectacular view of the town below. I was able to capture a photo that looks like a town straight from a Nicolas sparks book. Truly beautiful

Beautiful lighthouse and grounds. We unfortunately got there a half an hour before closing then a heavy rainstorm. We unfortunately parked in the wrong area at the shrine fort across the street. They closed the gate in front of us.

I feel bad reviewing as we didn’t get there in time to go up and look at the view. Just my fair warning that the parking fees around the area are a bit steep. We had a look around and took a family photo with the lighthouse. Pretty cool to see though.

You can climb the stars to the top of the light house for fantastic views of the Savannah River. In fact, if you could peer far enough you’d see Hilton Head!

You can drive right up to the lighthouse, so it's easier to view for disabled and elderly. It's a very nice lighthouse, and you can go up in the lighthouse for a fee. There is parking close by. This and the beaches were my favorite part of Tybee Island.

You need to book early to get a fun house or hotel here for Spring Break, but we LOVE the beaches here!

The lighthouse is beautiful but closed for repairs. I walked around the outside and the other houses there. Worth the trip

We went out on a day that was 99 and humid. Bad idea. LOTS of traffic getting onto the island, and we ended up being too late to buy tickets and go up the lighthouse. Easy walk to the beach from here - obviously. More of an afternoon trip than a stop on the road for us.

Also! Make sure to drive all the way up to the light house for parking. It's free at the light house, but you have to pay to park at the Fort/beach.

Awesome place to go see. Make sure you are prepared to make the long climb up the lighthouse stairwell. It wasn't air conditioned (we were there in July) so make sure you take full advantage of the landings for breaks and opened windows for some fresh air. Also make sure you leave your vertigo on the ground because it's a breathtaking view at that height.
