“"yurt" sure to have a good time!”
Awake to find a wooded oasis on the banks of Elm Creek in the midst of the Texas Midwest, located just south of the city of Abilene. Pecan, red oak, cottonwood and elm trees arch over the campground. A historic water tower and observation deck constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps with rust-colored sandstone overlook the large swimming pool, a popular summertime attraction, and white-tailed deer and other wildlife can be spotted along a wooded hiking trail. Abilene State Park offers several diverse outdoor recreation opportunities. From RV-compatible campsites with water and electric hookups to tent camping sites, screened shelters and even yurts (large canvas tents with furniture and flooring), Abilene State Park has lots of overnight camping options. Pets permitted- on leashes, please!
A beautiful little state park that's totally dead in mid-November except for the RV park.
Make sure reserve ahead though if possible. We had to move because the office was closing (they told us an area to go too with open spots "and pick one that was open") Well, of course Someone reserved that spot online after we'd set everything up so naturally we saw his printout and moved. Not a big deal but a bit of a pain to say the least.
Beautiful State Park. Even has a huge seasonal swimming pool. I understand it was not opened in 2014 due to needed repairs, but rumor has it will be open again for the 2015 season - check first.
Consistent with every Texas State Park I've visited, bathrooms and showers were very clean. The park itself is well maintained. Lots of neat foot trails although we were only there over night and could not explore them to any degree.
Only a 3 hour drive for us so we will definitely be going back soon. Be sure to make reservations with Texas Parks and Widlife, as I was told this park is often full on the weekends until after October.
Great park with foot trails easy to navigate. we will be back for sure.
