“one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the northwest”
Downstream from Libby, the Kootenai River enters a canyon and flows over Kootenai Falls, one of the largest free-flowing waterfalls in the northwest. The falls and surrounding area are considered sacred to the Kootenai Indians whose ancestors inhabited the region. A forest trail leads from the highway parking lot down to the Swinging Bridge and makes a nice hike that is not too strenuous. Kootenai Falls was the setting for the filming of the movie, "River Wild". Location: US Hwy 2 between Libby and Troy, milepost 21. 12 Miles west of Libby Montana and 6 Miles east from Troy Montana on the side of the highway is a rest stop where you can go and view the falls. Also there is a swinging bridge that takes you over the Kootenai River!
Location pin is unfortunately not correct; actually at 48.452608, -115.769768, description is accurate. Fantastic geology and enjoyable short hikes; not wheelchair accessible unfortunately. Nice place to picnic and take photos.
I am an avid adventurer and I highly recommend this stop. This is family friendly.Seeing many national parks and hiking for the views. This is one hidden gem. This doesn’t cost any money (yet!) and you have a short hike to see many falls and you can get as close as you like to the waterfall. Picture perfect.
Gorgeous falls and stretch of river. The swinging bridge can be a little daunting for some and if the place is crowded it can take some time for your turn to come to cross. Once across there are hiking opportunities or the option to go down to the river and possibly swim if you can handle the cold. It is a frequent destination for me due to living in the region.
AMAZING! Worth the stop and highly recommend. Milepost 21 is accurate. This led us right to the parking lot. Hike is relatively easy. It's about half a mile to the bridge.
One of my favorite places to stop! Beautiful scenery that was featured in the movie "The River Wild".
