“the mother road sings!”
In October 2014, the village of Tijeras, New Mexico installed a musical road on a two-lane stretch of U.S. Route 66 which plays America the Beautiful when a vehicle drives over it. This highway is labeled NM 333, between Miles 4 and 5, eastbound. Funded by the National Geographic Society, the project was coordinated with the New Mexico Department of Transportation who described the project as a way to get drivers to slow down.
Pretty neat considering the engineering behind it. Not easy to find however. Exit 170 off I40 turn east and go 2.5 miles and you will see the sign with instructions.
It was such a fun little detour! Don't follow gps- follow Sats0503's comment below for directions, worked perfect! We ended up keeping windows up. So cute!
Delightful! My favorite part is "from sea to shining sea" I wanted the grooves to extend the entire width of the road.
Coming from the east on 40 we got off at 175 got onto the old 66 going west about 2.5 miles, but you can only hear it going east in 66 so we had to turn around and roll down our windows and put your tires on the side. Short, but sweet. Got back on 40 at the 175 exit.
Sats0503 has the best directions for finding. Would love to see the city put better signage and marking us. Still very cool!
It’s really hard to find but so fun! It felt like a fun treasure hunt! Exit 170 off of I40... It is between mile marker 4 & 5.
We did not see any signs but painted on the road at the start is a white “upside down” T shape. It is IN the road where you normally drive. Going 45 mph is perfect!
We liked to hear it with the window down but you can hear it with them up as well.
This took a few tries to find, but we found it on 2/27/21. The key is to have your front tire be about 5" from the right-hand line on the road. It is between mile markers 4 and 5. Don't give up, you can find it and still hear it! So fun indeed...and worth the few tries it took us to do this. Roll down the windows to hear it!
Very cool experience! Definitely worth the detour!
Do not use your GPS. Take exit 170 and head EAST . sats0303 directions are the best!!!
Definitely cool! It is tricky though. You must be driving east bound and at 45 miles per hour. Then you have to hit the grooves by the white line on the road in order to be able to hear the music. We tried a few times and finally got it just right. We loved the experience!
So awesome! Windows up for sure. Between mile markers 4 & 5 east bound.
