“one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon”

Smith Rock State Park encompasses 651 acres on the Oregon high desert plateau which hovers around 3000 feet in elevation. The park and campground are open year-round. A $5 day use permit or a current state park camp receipt is needed for each vehicle. A yearly permit is available for $30. Hiking trails offer spectacular views of the surrounding area. You can spend 30 minutes walking along the river or a half day making a loop on the entire trail system that extends outside of the park. The major rock faces are composed of welded tuff (compressed volcanic ash) reaching a height of up to 550 feet. The picnic and campground areas sit on top of the rimrock which is made up of columnar basalt. There are over 1400 climbing routes in and around the park ranging from some of the best sport climbs in the world to. “Why would anyone want to climb that pile of choss”. People climb year-round, but summer temperatures can reach 100+ degrees (f), and in the dead of winter the thermometer stays close to the freezing mark (32f) during the day. Spring and fall are the most popular climbing months.

At Smith Rock, towers of volcanic ash rise like the spires of a cathedral out of the sage and dust of the high desert at the birthplace of American sport climbing. Whether you come for the climb or come to unwind, you’ll see why Smith Rock is one of the 7 Wonders of Oregon.

Thousands of routes attract climbers from every part of the globe, including more than a thousand bolted routes. Cliffs of tuff and basalt are ideal for rock climbing of all difficulty levels. There is sport climbing, traditional climbing and bouldering. Hiking and mountain biking and opportunities to spot golden eagles, prairie falcons, river otter and beaver in the park attract even those who don’t come for the climb.

Situated in Central Oregon, home to 300 days of sun a year, Smith Rock is located in an outdoor adventurer’s playground. Golfing, caving, paddle boarding on the Deschutes and skiing Mt. Bachelor are all close by. Mountain bikers can hit Phil’s Trail, while cyclists can take their pick of five scenic bikeways with names like Madras Mountain Views and Sisters to Smith Rock. Hikers will want to explore the obsidian lava flows at Newberry Crater National Volcanic Monument, where astronauts trained to walk on the moon. And craft beer fans, you have your pick of 24 breweries and counting in Central Oregon - 17 in Bend alone.

Insane scenery! Gorgeous red rocks, beautiful desert, peaceful waters, and LOTS of rock climbers! We only had a couple hours to hike, but are most certainly going back soon to spend a day or two.

This place is great. Easy hikes and if you're into climbing, several manageable faces.

Unbelievable scenery. Best to visit in an early morning in spring/summer, when the low rays of sun paints everything yellow. You can spot Mount Hood in the Western distance between the cliffs in clear weather!
