“explore, teach, and share the arts”
In 1986, a few dedicated individuals set out to create a non-profit arts center that would explore, teach, and share the arts with all people throughout the Atlanta area and those who choose to visit the area. The old Trolley Car Barn and Power Station in Stone Mountain Village was purchased by ART Station in 1987 and a 3.5 million dollar campaign was completed to renovate the space into a contemporary arts center housing a small theatre, 5 art galleries, a gift shop, rehearsal, dance and music studios, ceramics studio, box-office, production and administrative space. The ART in the ART Station name comes from a 1913 photograph of a trolley car in front of the building with the wording of "Atlanta Rapid Transit" written on the side of the car. Today, the dream of the founders of ART Station is a reality with programs serving over 50,000 patrons and students each year. ART Station is home to its own professional equity Theatre Company, 5 art galleries, a children’s gallery, a gift shop, classrooms, production and administrative space.
