“wide selection of quality pies”
Stanton, known as "The Little White City" for its charming wood-frame houses, is home of the world’s largest coffee pot. The multi-thousand cupper sits 125 feet above town to honor native daughter Virginia Christine, who played Mrs. Olson, the kindly Swedish lady who was once the spokesperson for Folger’s coffee. A few years ago, Stanton added the world’s largest cup and saucer to its wonders. We had known about the coffee pot for many years, but learned about the cup and saucer from Susie Johnson, proprietor of Susie’s Kitchen. Susie serves her coffee in sturdy mugs, and it is a good companion to a slice of pie. There is always a large choice of cream pies and twin-crust pies. The one that must be eaten is Fruit of the Forest, an extravaganza of apple, rhubarb, strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry heaped into a golden crust that is light, flaky, and flavorful. In contrast, the cherry pie was nothing to write home about; when we asked Susie about the significant difference in crusts, she told us that she makes a lard crust for the Fruit of the Forest pie and a regular crust for cherry. A huge difference! -roadfood.com
