“Attractions & Culture in Spring Green, WI”
The Japanese-inspired house, sculpted atop Deer Shelter Rock, is the original structure of what is now an extraordinary complex of rooms, streets, buildings and gardens covering over 200 acres. The main attraction experience is divided into three self-guided tours, which include the House, Gatehouse, Millhouse, Streets of Yesterday and Alex Jordan Center.
Awesomely weird! First read about this in Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Sunday Morning also did a bit on it not too long ago. A must-see if you're in Wisconsin. Come for the carousel, stay for the giant sea creature!! Kid friendly (maybe age 5+). Try the homemade fudge in the gift shop at the end. 5/5!!!
INCREDIBLE. Go go go!! There are three sections; you can pay for one, two, or all three. DEFINITELY do at least section two to see the carousel at the end. Reviewer below is not kidding; set aside a few hours for this one. It defies description. We'd been hoping to come here ever since we read about it in "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman, and it was so much more than we could have expected.
You will never see something like this anywhere else. We were amazed and mystified. The website and brochure do not do it justice. There is a lot of walking, including ramps and stairs, and very tall people will have to bend often.
The is a must see attraction for everyone; a once in a lifetime experience that cannot be described in words and pictures certainly doesn't do it justice! If Willie Wonka had become a museum curator and started dropping acid, he may have come up with something similar to HOTR. It's the most amazing collection of wonderment Wisconsin has to offer!
MUST SEE! A great experience. You will want to allow yourself at least 4 hours to absorb the amazing displays (watch for their hours of operation). 3 sections - all must be seen. I don't want to give away the experience, but all ages will enjoy. 5 stars are not enough - deserves a 10!
