“located on the site of the Somerset Plantation”
The Crab Trap Restaurant is located on the site of Somerset Plantation, which was the property of John Somers (one of this area’s original settlers). Within a few hundred feet on the other side of the main intersection stands the Somers Mansion built between 1720 and 1726 by Richard Somers, the son of John Somers. The house now belongs to the State of New Jersey and is one of the oldest settlements in the state! Overlooking the Great Egg Harbor Bay in Somers Point is the Crab Trap Restaurant. The Crab Trap was established in 1967 by Jack Wallace. Back then it was known as Maenner’s Cafe serving tap beer and sandwiches to Somers Point residents.
