“Outdoors & Recreation in Sheridan, WY”
Over the past million years, Shell Creek has incised a deep chasm through the sedimentary stone and ancient granite. The water of Shell Falls, dropping at a rate of 3,600 gallons per second, follows fractures in the resistant granite. Shell Canyon is named for the shell fossils found in the sedimentary canyon walls.
Closed through summer 2017!
This is an amazing stop! The walkways help see all the falls and rapids well.
Visited this falls on Sept 13, 2017, a clear sunny day, driving from Ranchester to Cody Wy. via Hwy 14. Scenic overlook for falls was closed but some trails gave access to blocked views. Further west on the road were a number of view points showcasing the beautiful valley. Very well worth the stops to take in the grandeur.
Nice spot to learn about the area and see some waterfalls.
