“Good morning, good afternoon, and goodnight!”
In filming “The Truman Show,” the 1998 Jim Carrey movie about a man who unknowingly lives his life as a reality-show star, director Peter Weir knew the location would set the tone – ideally creating a dreamlike quality in a real-life place. After rejecting resort towns up and down the West Coast, he found what he wanted in Seaside. Weir brought his cast and crew to begin filming in 1996. The cottage at 31 Natchez Street served as Truman’s home, from where he greets his neighbors with the now-famous line: “Good morning…and in case I don’t see you, good afternoon and good night!” Several scenes were shot at Modica Market in Central Square, and owners Charles and Sarah Modica, along with other town residents, had cameos in the film. The local street- and sea-scapes often served as inspiration for the film’s set designer, who rode his bike through town when he needed fresh ideas for a scene. The movie has had a lasting legacy. Location fees paid by Paramount pictures helped to build the Seaside School. Film crews from Germany and the BBC have passed through shooting footage about the making of “The Truman Show.”
I believe this is also home to one of the smallest post offices in the US. Awesome little town, amazingly beautiful.
It is picture perfect and looks peaceful and almost like a real filmset. Wish we had more time.
