“an oligotrophic tarn in Acadia National Park”

Jordan Pond is an oligotrophic tarn in Acadia National Park near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. It covers 187 acres (76 ha), with a maximum depth of 150 feet (46 m) and a shoreline of 3.6 miles (5.8 km).The pond was formed by the Wisconsin Ice Sheet during the last glacial period. It is flanked on the west by Penobscot Mountain and to the northeast by the two mountains known as the Bubbles. The southern end, and outflow, are limited by the natural Jordan Pond moraine, which has been supplemented by a small dam. The pond has clear water, with visibility normally 46 feet (14 m) and occasions of up to 60 feet (18 m) recorded, the deepest in Maine. It serves as the water supply for the village of Seal Harbor. It does not experience dissolved oxygen depletion in the lake depths. Some types of boating are permitted, but humans and pets must stay out of the water. The Jordan Pond and the Jordan Pond House Restaurant are a famous combination in Acadia National Park. It is difficult to separate them. A late 1800's version of the restaurant first established the tradition of having tea & popovers on the lawn while overlooking Jordan Pond and the North and South Bubble Mountains. The original bulding was destroyed by fire in 1979 and was later rebuilt with the help of private funds. The Jordan Pond House Restaurant is open 11:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. late May through late October and is operated by a private business concessionaire on park land. Reservations are recommended by calling 207.276.3316. The Jordan Pond Shore Trail circumvents the pond. A Carriage Roadis passes the restaurant and pond on the west side running north and south. Wildwood Stables, to the southeast, offers carriage rides for a reasonable price. The Island Explorer Shuttle Bus has a pickup and drop-off point at the restaurant.

It's pretty but you cannot enter the water here. It's a boat ramp into the public drinking water supply.

Pond fantastic. Restaurant very good but also overpriced. Carriage trails were excellent for biking - loop around Jordan pond and Eagle lake is 11 miles.

One of my favorite kayaking spots, the water is so clear and the views are breathtaking... I can float for hours without a care in the world!
