Bring plenty of water and don't forget the sunset at middle up, 200ft mile hike.
Met so many great friends here just by helping set up tents. Bring your own toilet paper, trust me.
Cheers, Rigs
Just beautiful. It was a long bumpy road to the camp ground but so worth it. Get there at a decent time and roam around the site. Amazing views all around! You hear the animals at dusk which is awesome and the stars are completely unreal at night. Have binoculars because bison and big horn sheep may come into sight during your stay
Stayed here twice. Bison go right through campground at night. Great hills to climb to see them roaming around. Second time though the wind was so hard our tent poles broke. Still recommend it. Take in your own water.
The pit toilets are not gross. Make the trip down the gravel roads. We saw dancing spiders, bison, prairie dogs, mountain goats, and heard lots of noises.
We stayed in July 2016. Awesome campground! Get there early if you want a good spot, it fills up VERY fast and there are only a few picnic tables available. Definitely worth the drive! We didn't see any bison, but we did see a big horn sheep and tons of prairie dogs! Also, coyotes howl as soon as the sun goes down. Beautiful sunrise. We will definitely return next time we're in SD!!
The route to this campground is so beautiful as well as the actual campground, many spots to choose from. Has bathrooms and trash removal. Many trails in the surrounding area!

Came in mid October passing through to head to the Black Hills. Was free so why not, right? every spot was filled up and people didn't even plan to camp with a tent and parked in front of campsites. Was loud and not worth it. Nice area, but the Back Country is the only place to get peace of mind. Still free as well. Overall it is not bad, just not my cup of joe!

Free. Kinda long drive on dirt road, but was fine even in my sedan. Had no animal problems, although bison are in the area and the campsites surround a prairie dog town. Picnic table. Toilet. Free. All good.

Called the number listed to ask about taking our fifth wheel there and the Ranger said no RVs. Tent camping only. Beautiful place, serene, prairie dogs and Buffalo everywhere. But DON'T CAMP IN AN RV.

We stayed here after visiting the badlands. It IS a long drive down a dirt road but we did fine in our ‘78 van. To get the views of the actual badlands, climb to the hills at the western side of the camp. But the immediate surroundings are still beautiful. Only some sites have sun shades so if you’re going in the hot months definitely bring something for shade! It’s a wide open area, don’t expect privacy. But everyone there when we were there was very quiet and mostly showed up after the sun went down. We did some exploring by hiking up the hills and there is a very refreshing creek with a mud/clay bottom that our dog enjoyed swimming in and we enjoyed cooling off in. We saw two bison in the park and dozens on our ride out! AND, the site are situated in a circular pattern surrounding a grassy area - which is home to dozens of prairie dogs. They are very entertaining and cute. They are around until the sun goes down, popping up and chattering and running around. Pretty cool feature. The bathrooms were clean and there are two buildings so there’s never a line. Place was pretty much full when we got there, we got the last sight. Seemed like a lot of people get there early, set up and take off for the day so get there early to get a spot. Would definitely stay there again but during cooler temps. If it’s hot you’re pretty much trapped under your tarp for the day, but it’s a very fun place to camp and hike around.
