“Making wines since 1985”
Bill Wathen and Dick Doré (also known as the “Foxen Boys”) have been making wine together since 1985, when they founded Foxen Winery & Vineyard at the historic Rancho Tinaquaic in northern Santa Barbara County. Since that time, their dedication has remained the same—the creation of very small production, sustainably-farmed, vineyard-focused wines using a "minimalist" approach to winemaking. The winery was named in memory of William Benjamin Foxen, an English sea captain and Dick's great-great grandfather, who came to Santa Barbara in the early 1800's. In 1837, this Santa Barbara County pioneer purchased the Rancho Tinaquaic, a Mexican Land Grant that originally totaled nearly 9000 acres and comprised most of what is now known as Foxen Canyon. Captain Foxen adopted the distinctive "anchor" as his ranch cattle brand, which has become a trademark of the winery. It is very fitting that FOXEN has made its home on the 2000-acre Rancho Tinaquaic, which remains in family hands. With the completion of FOXEN’s new solar-powered winery and tasting room in 2009, the historic and beloved “tasting shack was renamed “foxen 7200”, where Bill and Dick now feature their Bordeaux and Cal-Ital-style wines, under a newly designed label. FOXEN Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Rhône-style wines are showcased in the new solar-powered tasting room at 7600 Foxen Canyon Road. Both tasting rooms are open daily, 11 to 4. Bill and Dick invite you to visit FOXEN to taste their wines and experience the bucolic setting of the Rancho Tinaquaic. And then you’ll understand why many say, “If you don’t know FOXEN, you don’t know DICK...or BILL!”
My husband and I visit Los Olivos and the wineries every April, we love Foxen. Always bring wine home from there. I've even bought the t-shirt.
Foxen Vineyard was a very unique, interesting and favorite stop on our Santa Barbara area wine trail. We don’t even remember when this happened, but at some point we learned that there are two locations for Foxen Vineyard. It was a bit confusing, because we weren’t sure which location was expecting us. Eich! Anyway, we just drove and picked one which turned out to be the newer of the two tasting rooms and the larger facility which also housed their winery operation.
The land that Foxen Vineyard lives on has been in co-owner’s, Dick, family since 1837 when Dick’s great-great-grandfather got the land in a Mexican land grant. The land was once used as a horse ranch and still has the visual reminder of this at the 7600 location when you look at the winery and barrel storage areas from the outside. It looks like a very large horse stable that you would likely see at a large ranch or the horse races. This location’s tasting room is very large and has room to handle multiple groups. No feeling crowded here!
Now, the other location is a different story as it is entirely a different experience. It is only just down the road about 1 mile. Apparently, it was the original tasting room for over 20 years and was the actual location of the scene in the movie Sideways. When they opened the new, large location about 4 years back they were planning on closing and tearing down the old “shack”, as they fondly call it now, but they received shouts and pleas from folks all around to keep the famous tasting room open. Well, of course we had to stop here and we were so glad that we did!
The small, famous tasting room at 7200 Foxen Canyon Road was just plain fun! Small, rub elbow to elbow with your fellow “winers” and enjoy the nostalgia of history and fame!
We all recommend that you don’t miss Foxen Vineyards on your wine trail of this area. And you surely should stop at both locations as each has its own appeal. AND they each pour different wines, so just one more reason to stop! We’re sure you will enjoy. Tell them that The Traveling Winers said “Hi”!
