“the 10th mission”
Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth of the California missions to be founded by the Spanish Franciscans. It was established on the Feast of St. Barbara, Dec 4, 1786. The mission still functions as a church today. Self-guided tours daily and docent tours for schools and other groups are arranged by appointment.
Beautiful place lovely tour
There are different types of tours you can take here. The eight dollar self guided tour allows you to roam all over the grounds of the mission.
The original church was built in 1786. There have been a total of 4 churches on the grounds here. Each bigger and better than the one before. The third church was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812. The present church was built in 1820.
We thought the tour was well worth the admission price. One could easily spend two to three hours marveling at the architecture and beautiful art work.
We really enjoyed our visit here and highly recommend you pay it a visit if you have the opportunity.
