“The shared pleasure of wine”
Wine is about the shared pleasures of life — slowing down long enough to appreciate the blessings of the land while enjoying local food and wine with friends, family and community. And that’s where we began. In July 2010, Mike McHenry and a group of friends met to talk about starting a new winery in Texas. With the Hill Country region emerging as one of the hottest new wine and tourist destinations in the US, and with Texas wineries continuing to grow at double-digit rates, the group decided to go forward with their vision to establish a destination winery in the heart of small town Texas . They chose the city of San Saba for the winery and retail tasting room, because of the city’s classic, early 20th century historical structures and the commitment of several renaissance pioneers
The Traveling Winers on Texas Wine Trail
Does anyone know the story behind the name of Wedding Oak Winery in San Saba, Texas? We sure didn’t, and to be honest, when planning the trip, we didn’t even think twice about the name as we see very unique names for wineries all the time. What a cool surprise to learn that there is a HUGE oak tree in town that is over 400 years old and has for hundreds of years been a spot for weddings and other ceremonies. Even more interesting is that where some of the old limbs used to be are now markings that resemble a heart. No wonder so many wedding have been held under that old oak tree!
Okay, enough about the tree! Let’s talk about the winery! It is just as interesting! The decor is very nice, with beautiful wood everywhere and tasteful decorations. Our host for the tasting and tour was the tasting room manager, Marcus. Marcus was an excellent tour guide and information source! We learned that the winery has only been open since June 2012 and used to be an old mercantile building. They produce about 5,500 cases per year currently, but are set up to grow up to 10,000 cases. They have their own vineyards outside of town and also source grapes from the High Plains and the Hill Country, and produce 100% Texas wines. And boy, are they good!
If you are in this part of Texas, you definitely should take a few minutes to slow down and come visit Wedding Oak Winery. Check their website or give them a call if you are interested in a wine dinner. And don’t forget to check their calendar often, especially in the Spring and Summer, as I’m sure they use their beautiful patio for entertainment quite frequently!
