“An inescapable experience”
Alcatraz and history go hand in hand. Once home to some of America's most notorious criminals, the federal penitentiary that operated here from 1934 to 1963 brought a dark mystique to the Rock. The presence of infamous inmates like Al "Scarface" Capone, and the "Birdman" Robert Stroud helped to establish the island's notoriety. To this day, Alcatraz is best known as one of the world's most legendary prisons.
It was a smooth ride to Alcatraz and once on the island there was so much history to learn. The tour guide was very friendly and told some cheesy jokes along with some stories not often told about Alcatraz. The audio tour gave so much detail about the prison and the surrounding buildings from prison guards and prisoners. The gift shop has a variety of fun souvenirs as well.
Me and my boyfriend was there once, is really nice, you can have a headset free to talk about the history of the island, we recommend the visit!!!
Alcatraz was one of the most notorious prisons. Although now it is not operational it is now an attraction spot for tourists. This prison was closed after 29 years of operation on March 21st 1963. It did not close because of the disappearance of Morris and the Anglins, but because the institution was too expensive to continue operating. This prison also housed some of the worst criminals including Al Capone. Many prisoners died trying to escape off the island. The reason I chose this location was because it was maybe the best prisons that housed the worst of the worst criminals in the US and who knows what it would be like if this prison wasn't there to hold these men.
