“Only land-access sea-cave on the California coast!”

The unique cave which you see here was named "Sunny Jim" by Frank Baum of Wizard Oz fame. The opening bears a resemblance to a cartoon character Sunny Jim who was a mascot for the British Force Wheat cereal products in the 1920's. Fossilized shell and water level marks indicate that the ocean's might was busy for 200,000 years boring this cave into rock and sandstone. The beautiful colorings are mineral deposits varying from the red of iron oxide, the black, grays and yellows of vegetable matter to the pinkish purple of iodine in the kelp. Two years work by laborers hired by Gustav Shultz in 1902 and 1903, using pick and shovel, created the tunnel. Several years after its completion 145 steps were built into the lighted tunnel where visitors can still descend and enjoy the wonders of Sunny Jim. This unique and beautiful cave has a manmade tunnel from the Cave Store which allows visitors to enter the unusual and breathtaking Sunny Jim Cave by land. Even though from the sea you can enter any one of the other six ocean-carved and facinating caves, this is the only known land access sea cave on the California coastline. So unusual is Sunny Jim and so well known that the in Encyclopedia Americana it is noted as one of the "must" sights in Southern California!  Admission price: $4 adults and $3 for 16 years and under. The Cave Store has snorkeling gear for sale year round. Snorkel rentals are available May-September. $20 minumum for 2 hours for snorkel, mask and fins. Bring ID and credit card for deposit.

the cave is alright but if you go snorkeling and kayaking with a group from an outfitter you can snorkel in the cave. we were 2 feet away from seal lions in the cave!

Parking in the area is tough, but it's a fun little descent and cave overlooking the water. Worth the $5, and the shop itself has all sorts of cute jewelry.

Great quick spot to stop! Parking in the area is hard, but it’s right by La Jolla cove so definitely worth it to visit both
