“Art of the people”
The Mingei International Museum is a non-profit public institution that collects, conserves and exhibits folk art, craft and design. The word mingei, meaning 'art of the people,' was coined by the Japanese scholar Dr. Setsu Yanagi by combining the Japanese words for all people (min) and art (gei).
If you're into folk art and stuff that's a little weirder and more offbeat, definitely stop by here. It's so fascinating, and I think it's well worth the $10 admission price. Currently they've got a display of black dolls that's really cool and thought provoking, and in the past they had an exhibit on surf boards which was rad. It's stuff like that, the stuff you might not see as art, that makes this place so cool.
