The Gateway

The Gateway is Salt Lake City's only open-air contemporary destination that delivers the ultimate in shopping, dining, and entertainment. Shop and dine at over 130 stores and restaurants. The gateway is a large open air retail, residential and office complex in downtown salt lake city. It currently contains over 100 stores and restaurants. The gateway is a destination for many visiting salt lake city. The gateway offers the best combination of shopping, dining, entertainment and beautiful scenery. The gateway began as part of salt lake city's  urban development project, and the first phase was completed prior to the 2002 winter olympics that were held in utah. Other highlights include the clark planetarium, the megaplex 12 at the gateway, the discovery gateway children's museum, and the depot. The energy solutions arena is directly across the street.  The gateway encompasses the old union pacific building. This renovated and restored depot is an important part of utah's history, serving as one of the most outstanding architectural structures in utah. The union pacific depot grand hall serves as the grand entrance to the gateway. The grand hall is the venue of choice for dozens of weddings, corporate functions, reunions, fundraisers and school proms each year.                        Replacing the historic rail yards on the west side of the depot, is the olympic legacy plaza, home to the olympic wall of honor and the dancing waters of the olympic snowflake fountain. This beautiful fountain is a must see for anyone. The water is choreographed to dance along with a wide range of incredible music and lights at night.  The gateway hosts many of the biggest community events in downtown salt lake city. Annually we hold the st. Patrick’s day parade, ms walk, the chalk art festival, the ksl family book festival, light up the night and the downtown alliance “eve” event for new years. This year we will also add "the runway salt lake" fashion event, and many more! Along with all these outstanding events we also hold music on the plaza, and have street performers throughout the spring and summer months, and many other charitable and community events.
