“one of the nations top rafting spots”
Arkansas Headwaters is one of the nation's premier recreation areas. Stretching for 152 miles along the Arkansas River, the area offers abundant and outstanding opportunities for fishing, rafting, kayaking, picnicking, hiking, camping, mountain biking, and sightseeing among deep canyons, broad valleys and towering mountain peaks. The cities and towns along the river - Leadville, Buena Vista, Poncha Springs, Salida, Canon City, Florence and Pueblo - offer fine dining, lodging and plenty of Western hospitality. The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area (AHRA) is a landmark cooperative effort of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Through this partnership, the agencies provide visitors with outstanding recreation opportunities and care for the nationally significant natural resources of the upper Arkansas River Valley.
Amazing place but be advised to camp here you MUST bring your own portable toilet system. There are no onsite facilities and they won't let you camp without your own. Also beware of bears!
My brother and I camped here for a night. And boy, we had lots of fun here. We tried almost everything that the place offered. The first thing that we did was set camp. There were several groups who camped as well. Just before noon, we headed to the river to go fishing. We were able to catch a few good ones and grilled them for our lunch. In the late afternoon, we went kayaking on the calm side of the river. The view was surely awesome. The valleys and mountain views were definitely something that made a mark on us. I highly recommend this trip to those who are nature-loving and outdoorsy.
Salida Colorado is in the heart of the Rockies, located along the Arkansas River. It has the distinction of having the largest historic district in the state, which intrigued me.
