“the best alternative movie experience in Detroit”
3 Screens. Operated by Landmark since 1997. Like the city of its location, the Main Art Theatre offers something for everyone. Located in the heart of downtown Royal Oak, it is surrounded by a number of galleries, restaurants and other one-of-a-kind businesses that have come to typify this funky enclave. The theatre was originally built in the early 1940s as a single-screen theatre. As the face of Royal Oak changed, so did that of the Main Art, embracing an eclectic mix of sophistication and fun. Today, the theatre features the Detroit area's finest selection of independent film and foreign language cinema. Each summer, the theatre hosts a midnight series, having offered new classics like The City of Lost Children as well as hometown favorites such as Evil Dead 2. The Main Art proudly serves Great Lakes Coffee, local Fair Trade and Organic.
