“Abandoned castle on Red Mountain”

Castle Mont Rouge is an abandoned castle, designed by American architect Robert Mihaly, known for his work at Duke University and the National Cathedral, as a private residence and country studio. Built in 2005, the design was based on architecture from Central and Eastern Europe, complete with 18 pinnacles and a turret. The castle was abandoned in 2008, although a fundraising campaign was launched to fund renovating it in 2014. The castle is still abandoned as of 2016. According to a real estate listing for the property on Zillow: This is definitely a one of a kind. A Castle in ruins. Perfect for a romantic handyman. Your kids will love you. It's even featured in a coffee table book coming out in a few months in Britain. The location is on a cul-de-sac just across the street from the actual mountain top of Red Mountain. The view is divine. The acreage is mostly covered in hardwoods.

Location on Roadtrippers is slightly off, correct address is on Atlas Obscura. Has a fence with "no trespassing" signs but fence ends for those willing to go anyway, super cool and worth the trip even if you don't want to go past the fence.

Went to the castle today,
Robert Mihaly was there working on restoration. The gate was open so my daughter and I walked down the 'drive way' and spoke with him. He said he plans to have the castle fully restored by years end. I find that hard to believe, but it would be amazing! He did seem quirky, but he didn't run us off the property! I asked him about the moat I read about and he told me he plans to move most of the dirt out front to the back of the property after restoration to complete the moat. He also mentioned he had 2 children and felt it would be a shame to not restore it for them to spend time there as well.
Glad we made the drive, and it was nice to meet him.
I look forward to seeing the castle in a better state of repair in the next year or so!

I arrived just after sunset. For those that seek the creepy hair standing up on the back of your neck feeling, that's a great time to go, though I would have liked to admire it in full daylight. The road is poor, 4-wheel drive is helpful. Definitely worth the stop, a true oddity off the beaten path.

PLEASE BE AWARE!!! This is no longer an abandoned road side attraction. The owner is working hard to resurrect the place after years of abuse by vandals. Robert is very cordial, but unannounced visits are probably not appreciated. It slows him down from the monumental task at hand. ...from a friend.
